Religion

Yesterday I read another chapter of my religion book, and this is the basic outline of what I read:
There being so many books in the old testament, I've not yet reached the new Testament, and yesterday I was reading about Israel as the divided kingdom. After the death of Solomon, the kingdom was split into two, Judah, and Israel. From that time on, both Israel and Judah had a fair share of both good and bad kings, with a bad king being defined as a king who lead the people away from God, and a good king doing just the opposite.

In particular I read about the King Ahab, with his wife Jezebel, and their intolerable persecution of those who spoke out against their worship of Baal. This murderous behaviour caused many of the prophets to fly, so God sent Elijah, one of the most well-known prophets in the old Testament. Elijah performed many miracles, and finally persuaded the people when he challenged the 445 prophets of Baal to a contest, to prove who's god was real.

Both parties built altars, and then they had to pray to their god to light a fire on the altar they had built. All day the prophets of Baal tried to get their god to light a fire on the altar, but with no results, all the while Elijah taunting them. When it came to Elijah's turn, he prayed once to God, and fire from heaven came down and burnt his altar. Seeing this, the crowd was converted, and they rose up against the false prophets of Baal.

Even after all this, though, the people continually turned away from God, right up until the time of Jesus.
