Suzie Q.

The song Suzie Q is a classic song that has been played by wide range of artists; The original song was recorded by Dale Hawkins, a co-writer of the song.
The song was then covered by Carl Perkins. His version is quite a solid, rhythmic rough-edge cover of this song, and is probably my favourite version. The song was later covered by the band CCR. Their version is much more laid back in its feel than that of Carl Perkins. Theirs also has more words, and more solos. I would say this version probably has the most impressive solos.

As a side point, the Suzie Q was also a dance step popular in the 1930's

I've never actually heard Dale Hawkins' version, but I certainly want to - have you a recording?

As an interesting point regarding that version, James Burton played lead guitar on Dale's recording. Burton went on to become a v famous guitar in country-related areas - he played lead guitar on Gram Parsons' two solo albums, and was Elvis' lead guitarist from his comeback in '69 until his death. Another reason why I want to hear Suzie Q!

I also didn't realise Perkins did a version; I always enjoy his take on songs.

The CCR version doesn't do a great deal for me, though - the solos sort of go on without a great deal of point. The Part 1 (which includes the vocal bits) is better than the full-length version, but I still don't enjoy it that much.

How's the recording going?

Yeah I've got the Dale Hawkins version. It's interesting, it's faster than the other versions, and the riff is more like the CCR version, but it has more feel than the latter. I have to agree with you on the CCR version, it just doesn't have any energy.

Recording's good,We SHOULD have a cd in a week or two (we recorded on Monday, but at the wrong volume,so we're re-recording).
